Aripo Agreement

In another important step, which promises to further stimulate innovation in the region, ARIPO and WIPO recently agreed to use existing National Technology and Innovation Support Centres (TISCs) in ARIPO Member States. To date, TISCs operate in 10 ARIPI member states, with Uganda, Kenya and Mozambique hosting most of the TTISCs on the continent. Under the new ARIPO-WIPO cooperation agreement, these TISCs will form an integrated regional network, with ARIPO as a hub, enabling the optimal use of resources and an invaluable exchange of information and experience. “I am very pleased to conclude a strengthened partnership with ARIPO, the first regional organisation to sign this advanced cooperation agreement with the EPO,” said Campinos. “It demonstrates the strong commitment of our organizations to enhanced cooperation for innovation and economic development in our two regions. Africa is an increasingly dynamic part of the global economy, with strong growth potential. It will benefit from greater awareness of intellectual property and better access to the patent system. ARIPO is an intergovernmental organisation that facilitates cooperation between its member states on intellectual property. It consists of 19 countries, most of them English-speaking, with a market of about 350 million people – Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda being the fastest growing economies. Together with EPO Member States, enlargement countries, validation agreements and other strengthened partnerships, the EPO`s working products now cover a market of around 1.9 billion people. ARIPO as a regional organization is recognized by international organizations of international conventions; However, at present, THE member states of ARIPO are the members of the various agreements and conventions. For example, ARIPO countries are members of the following international/regional conventions: under the MOU, ariPO will systematically and effectively use the EPO`s products, instruments and working practices to improve its ability to conduct quality, timely and effective research and review of national patent applications for its Member States. The agreement is valid for the next five years and can be renewed for a further five years.

. The two protocols that make up the organization jointly include copyright, industrial design, patents, trademark rights, traditional knowledge and user rights. [7] Between 2014 and 2017, ariPO also launched its roving seminar programme to develop an understanding of the benefits of intellectual protection in the economy and science in its Member States. During this period, more than 2,000 participants participated in roving seminars in 15 ARIPO countries. A further 800 participants received seminars tailored to the specific interests of academic and research institutions. Together with its partners, ARIPO has also developed a number of university programs. These programmes are crucial for the emergence of a critical mass of African innovation experts, who can help catalyze the development of national innovation ecosystems, support ip awareness among key IP producers, and enable African countries to use their creative and innovative resources to support sustainable national economic development.
